Inland waters Border Lakes Boundary Rivers
Walleye, sauger, and the cross hybrid saugeye are difficult to identify
because they have similar body shape and coloration. In waters where they
may occur together, they are counted in combination in the catch limits.
Inland waters
The season is open all year on most inland waters, with these exceptions.
The season is closed February 15 through the Friday before the Saturday closest to May 1 in:
- West Okoboji Lake
- East Okoboji Lake
- Spirit Lake
The daily bag limit is 5 fish (walleye, sauger, saugeye combined; see
exceptions below).
The possession limit of 10 fish (walleye, sauger, saugeye combined).
The following exceptions concerning walleye. The daily bag limit
is 3 walleye with a possession limit of 6 walleye in those inland waters listed
below in the length limit category:
- West Okoboji Lake, Dickinson County
- All 17 to 22-inch walleyes must be immediately released alive.
- Keep only one walleye over 22 inches in length.
- East Okoboji Lake, Dickinson County
- All 17 to 22-inch walleyes must be immediately released alive.
- Keep only one walleye over 22 inches in length.
- Spirit Lake, Dickinson County
- All 17 to 22-inch walleyes must be immediately released alive.
- Keep only one walleye over 22 inches in length.
- Upper Gar Lake, Dickinson County
- All 17 to 22-inch walleyes must be immediately released alive.
- Keep only one walleye over 22 inches in length.
- Minnewashta Lake, Dickinson County
- All 17 to 22-inch walleyes must be immediately released alive.
- Keep only one walleye over 22 inches in length.
- Lower Gar Lake, Dickinson County
- All 17 to 22-inch walleyes must be immediately released alive.
- Keep only one walleye over 22 inches in length.
- Clear Lake, Cerro Gordo County
- All walleye must be over 14 inches in length.
- Keep only one walleye over 22 inches in length.
- Storm Lake, Buena Vista County
- All 17 to 22-inch walleyes must be immediately released alive.
- Keep only one walleye over 22 inches in length.
- Black Hawk Lake, Sac County
- All walleye must be over 15 inches in length.
- Big Creek Lake, Polk County
- All walleye must be over 15 inches in length.
- Keep only one walleye over 20 inches in length.
Border Lakes
The season is closed February 15 through the Friday before the Saturday closest to May 1 in:
- Little Spirit Lake, Dickinson County
- Iowa Lake, Emmet County
- Tuttle (Okamanpedan) Lake, Emmet County
- Burt (Swag) Lake, Kossuth County
- Iowa Lake, Osceola County
The daily bag limit and possession limit is 6 walleye in these lakes.
Boundary Rivers
The season is open all year on Mississippi River pools 9, 10, 14, 15,
16, 17, 18 and 19. There is a closed season for all fishing on the
Mississippi River in the tailwaters at three navigation dams from December
1 of each year through March 15 of the following year. The closed areas
include only the main channel and main channel border areas and do not
apply to backwaters and side channels in these zones. These closed fishing
areas are:
1. from Dam 11 at Dubuque downstream to the railroad bridge, near river mile 579.9.
2. from Dam 12 at Bellevue downstream to the mouth of Mill Creek, near
river mile 556.0 and
3. from Dam 13 at Clinton downstream to the downstream end of Stamp Island
near river mile 521.5.
For the Mississippi River and connected backwaters the aggregate daily
bag limit for walleye, sauger and saugeye combine is 6 fish and an
aggregate possession limit of 12 fish.
There is a continuous open season on the Missouri River and Big Sioux
River. There is an aggregate daily bag limit of 4 and a possession limit of 8
for walleye and sauger in the Big Sioux and Missouri Rivers.
A 15-inch minimum length limit applies to walleyes on all pools of the
Mississippi River. In addition, all walleye caught from Mississippi River
Pools 12 through 20, from 20 to 27 inches, must be immediately released
alive, and, no more than one walleye above 27 inches may be taken per day
on these pools.
