Special Fishing Trout Regulations


  • The season is open all year for all trout in both inland waters and boundary rivers.
  • A trout fee is required for any trout fishing (taking and possessing).
  • The daily bag limit is 5 fish
  • The possession limit is 10 fish
  • No size limit or bait/lure limit apply to most trout waters.
  • See below for details on more restrictive regulations.
    • Spring Branch Creek, from the spring source to county highway D5X as posted, Delaware County a 14-inch minimum length limit applies for:
        • Brown trout,
        • rainbow trout,
        • and brook trout
      • Posted areas of Bloody Run Creek, Clayton county A 14-inch minimum length limit applies for:
        • Brown trout
    • Artificial lures only in:
      • Bloody Run Creek, as posted
      • Spring Branch Creek, as posted
      • South Pine Creek, as posted
      • French Creek, as posted
      • Hewett and Ensign Creeks (Ensign Hollow), as posted
      • and Waterloo Creek, as posted
      Artificial lures cannot contain or have applied any natural or man-made substances which attract fish by taste or smell.
    • Catch and release only in:
      • All trout
        • Hewett and Ensign Creeks (Ensign Hollow), Clayton County
        • South Pine Creek, Winneshiek County
        • Waterloo Creek, Allamakee County
      • Brown trout
        • French Creek, Allamakee County
      • You must release the fish immediately into the water.
