Northern Brook Lamprey

northern brook lamprey

Ichthyomyzon fossor

  • Characteristics - the adult northern brook lamprey is identified from the American brook lamprey by its dorsal fin completely divided into two distinct fins; their teeth are weak and in clusters
  • Distribution - limited to one collection in the northeast quarter of Iowa (Delaware County), the secretive nature of its habits makes knowledge of its distribution rather vague and undetermined
  • Foods - larval stage feeds on minute plants, animals and bits of organic matter, adult digestive system is non-functional indicating that no food is consumed from fall until spring
  • Adult Length - 115 - 170 millimeters
