Waterloo Creek is a very productive stream that has exceptional water quality and tremendous insect hatches.
Its open setting and large size make it an exceptional fly-fishing stream. From Dorchester upstream the stream is
stocked weekly in select locations from April through October with catchable rainbow and brook trout.
Wild brown trout are present throughout the entire length of Waterloo Creek. Downstream of Dorchester the
brown trout population peaks at 4000 brown trout per stream mile, the highest ever documented in Iowa.
A portion of Waterloo Creek downstream of the Highway 76 bridge is a catch-and-release fishery.
All trout caught from this section must be released alive immediately, and anglers fishing in the posted portion
are limited to the use of artificial lures only. Primitive camping is allowed on the DNR wildlife management areas
along Waterloo Creek and private campgrounds are located nearby.
