Boil Advisory Issued in Jasper County
KELLOGG – The city of Kellogg in Jasper County has issued a boil advisory following a break in a downtown water main.
The break occurred Tuesday morning on Depot St. between Second and Third streets, but has affected the entire city. The repair creates the potential for contaminants to enter the system.
Residents should boil water for one minute and cool before using. Boiled or bottled water should be used for drinking, brushing teeth, making ice and food preparation. Boiling kills bacteria and other organisms. Residents can use untreated water for bathing and similar purposes.
Call the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Safe Drinking Water Hotline at 800-426-4791 for more information. Residents can also call the city at 641-526-3403.
The city will begin repairs Tuesday afternoon, flushing the lines and sampling water for bacteria and adequate chlorine levels.
The DNR is working with the city to ensure drinking water is safe. After water samples collected about 24 hours apart have tested clean for bacteria, the city will lift the advisory. The DNR will notify residents when water is safe to drink.
