Wastewater Discharge in South Des Moines Area
Posted: 08/06/2012
DES MOINES – The DNR received a report Thursday morning of a wastewater discharge in the Greenfield Plaza neighborhood south of Fort Des Moines.

The untreated wastewater flowed from a privately owned pumping station under Clover Hills Drive between County Line Road and Beardsley St. An estimated 20,000 to 25,000 gallons of wastewater discharged to an unnamed creek that flows into Middle Creek.

Residents are encouraged to keep children and pets out of the unnamed creek for at least 48 hours.

The contractor believes the wastewater release began July 29, after a power failure, followed by a backup generator failing. The release continued until power was restored about 2 p.m. Thursday.

The DNR will work with the contract operator on cleanup of the area and preventing future discharges.
