EPA proposes first carbon pollution standard for future power plants
Posted: 04/17/2012

EPA is proposing a carbon pollution standard for new power plants. The new standard will set national limits on the amount of carbon pollution future power plants can emit. The rule will apply only to new fossil-fuel-fired electric utility generating units (EGUs).  The rule will not apply to existing EGUs that are already operating or EGUs that will start construction over the next 12 months.

The proposed rule called “Standards of Performance for Greenhouse Gas Emissions for New Stationary Sources: Electric Utility Generating Units” is posted at: www.epa.gov/carbonpollutionstandard. The proposed rule was published in the Federal Register on April 13, 2012 (available at http://www.gpo.gov/fdsys/pkg/FR-2012-04-13/pdf/2012-7820.pdf). EPA will accept comment on the proposed rule until June 12, 2012.

EPA will also hold public hearings on this proposal. When available, the dates, times, and locations of the public hearings will be published in the Federal Register and also listed on www.epa.gov/carbonpollutionstandard.
