Wastewater Force Main Break in Clinton Bypasses Into Mississippi River
Posted: 03/19/2014

A break in a force main in Clinton resulted in a bypass of 50,000 gallons of raw domestic wastewater to the Mississippi River early Tuesday evening. The city immediately mobilized crews to address the break.

A means to pump and haul waste was initiated to minimize the quantity discharged to the river. Downstream water suppliers in Davenport, Fort Madison, Burlington and Keokuk were notified.

By 9:30 p.m. the repairs had been completed. The city hauled 4,500 gallons of wastewater to the wastewater plant.

The wastewater was not released into a public area and its dilution in the Mississippi River does not pose a known public health threat.

The DNR is monitoring the situation.
