Diesel Fuel Spill at Drake University
DES MOINES – The DNR received a report of a 50-gallon diesel fuel spill from a portable fuel tank onto the ground at Drake University around 8 a.m. today. The product ran off and entered a storm drain that directed the fuel to Closes Creek.
Mark Chambers, who reported the spill for Drake University, said absorbent material was utilized at the affected area and booms were applied across the creek. Clean Harbors, an environmental contractor onsite for other work, initially assisted university staff.
Hydro-Klean is completing the cleanup of the spill.
The estimated spill amount was reduced to 35 gallons of diesel fuel.
The DNR is investigating and will assess possible affects to aquatic life in Closes Creek.
