A web site of solar resources for building owners and professionals in the Midwest.
Welcome to the “Solar in the Midwest” Web site. Designed for building owners and professionals, this site is a resource on solar system installations in buildings in the Midwest.
It offers comprehensive answers about solar energy technologies and opportunities, and about choosing systems that best meet a specific building’s needs.
The site also provides listings of resources and financial incentives for nine Midwest states, including Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska , Ohio and Wisconsin.
The Advantages of Solar
An immense amount of solar energy strikes the Earth’s surface every day. This energy can be captured and converted into electricity using photovoltaic cells, or used for heat and other applications in solar-thermal systems.
Solar cells or photovoltaic panels convert the sun’s energy directly into electricity. In the last decade, more than 463 megawatts of U.S.-produced photovoltaic power have been installed worldwide.
Solar thermal systems use the sun’s energy to heat water or air. An estimated one million residential and 200,000 commercial solar water heating systems have been installed in the United States.
The advantages of solar energy include the abundance of the resource, extensive technological knowledge and capabilities, and the environmental benefits from reduced or avoided use of fossil fuels.
This site offers solutions for how to take advantage of solar energy in the Midwest. It is designed and maintained by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, with funding from the U.S. Department of Energy.
