Iowa’s second highest consumer of energy is the transportation sector. The choices Iowans make to reduce fuel consumption can improve environmental quality while lessening reliance on imported fuels. Here are several resources for understanding and improving transportation energy efficiency.
- Iowa’s Intermodal Transportation Program
- Transportation and Air Quality from EPA
- Through the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), these web pages provide thorough information on the relationship of fuel use to the environment, consumer tips, transportation alternatives, and more.
- EPA also offers a Fuel Economy Guide to help consumers compare environmental impacts and gas mileage of vehicles when buying a car.
- Transportation and Efficiency from DOE
- The U.S. Department of Energy offers several resources about fuel efficiency, alternative fuels, safety and innovation in the transportation sector.
- Alternative Fuels and Iowa (ethanol and
biodiesel)
- The Iowa DNR focuses much of its transportation energy efforts on accelerating the acceptance of alternative fuels, including ethanol and bio-diesel. The State of Iowa has one of the nation’s largest fleets of Flexible Fuel Vehicles, which can be powered by E85 (a blend of 85 percent ethanol, 15 percent gasoline).
- Iowa is a national leader in accelerating the acceptance of alternative transportation fuels. Renewable fuels such as
ethanol and
biodiesel help create economic opportunities for Iowa’s agricultural products, and improve the environment through reduced air emissions and other pollutants.
