The concept of intermodal transportation is to transfer freight from an energy intensive mode to a more efficient one. An example is transferring semi truck trailers to rail cars.
DNR Involvement
In conjunction with the Iowa Department of Transportation, the DNR’s Energy Bureau has developed an Intermodal Revolving Loan Program with the goal of demonstrating the energy savings potential of various intermodal transportation alternatives to the shipping/transportation industry. The DOT funds demonstration projects of intermodal transportation facilities, including terminals, transfer facilities, and freight distribution centers. This aids in establishing intermodal transportation services and/or facilities to serve Iowa in more energy efficient ways than were previously possible.
Major Projects Across Iowa
The Quad Cities Terminal Corporation paid for engineering, design work and land improvements on the construction of a double-stack container terminal built in Davenport, Iowa. This project will prevent back hauling of freight that passes through Iowa, resulting in substantial energy and cost savings.
