Project WILD



You and your students are interested in learning more about wildlife and where they live. You are researching components of different habitats. In particular, you want to study the kinds of animals found in each habitat. To supplement this study, you might incorporate the following Project WILD activities. Iowa-specific information (see Iowa supplemental information) is included to make the activities more relevant to Iowa students.


Habitat Rummy

Grade Level:

5-8

Setting:

indoors

Duration:

two 40-minute periods

Objectives:

Students will be able to 1) identify components
of habitat as food, water, shelter, and space
in a suitable arrangement; and 2) apply knowledge
of these components to habitat requirements of
various species of animals.

Method:

Students make cards and play a card game.

Here Today, Gone Tomorrow

Grade Level:

5-8

Setting:

indoors

Duration:

two 30- to 45-minute periods

Objectives:

Students will be able to 1) identify and describe
causes of extinction within animal species; 2)
define "threatened," "rare," and "endangered"
as applied to wildlife; and 3) identify any local
threatened or endangered animals.

Method:

Students become familiar with classification of
animals, conduct research, and make a master
list of threatened and endangered animals locally
and/or nationally, including factors affecting the
animals' condition.

Wildlife is Everywhere!

Grade Level:

K-4

Setting:

outdoors

Duration:

one 30- to 45-minute period

Objectives:

Students will be able to 1) compare human
and wildlife habitat; and 2) generalize that
wildlife is present around the world.

Method:

Students search their surroundings for evidence
of wildlife.
