blue bullet American Wilderness Leadership School (AWLS)

AWLS allows educators of all types (teachers, scout leaders; etc.) to experience a variety of outdoor skills. If you are inexperienced in the outdoors and always wanted to learn, or if you are already at a higher level of outdoor skill, and want to learn more, AWLS is for you. It is co-sponsored by DNR and Safari Club International. Two workshops are held each summer (AWLS I and II). For additional information, contact A. Jay Winter, 641/747-8383.

AWLS I Activities: canoeing, prairie excursion, backpacking, fishing, plaster casting, orienteering, archery, pond life, rifle shooting, muzzleloading, and shotgun shooting

AWLS II Activities: shooting, biotechnology, water quality, fly-fishing, bird banding, trapping, canoeing/camping, and lure making

blue bullet IOWATER

IOWATER is a statewide volunteer water quality monitoring program. Workshops are open to any individual or group that is interested in water quality. Upon completion of the workshop, you will be a certified Level 1 IOWATER Citizen Monitor. Check out the IOWATER web site for a current list of training opportunities.


blue bullet NatureMapping

NatureMapping trains citizens how to monitor and report wildlife and the habitats they observe them in. Workshops are held across the state for a minimum of 15 participants. Visit the Iowa NatureMapping web site for a list of upcoming workshops.


blue bullet Projects WILD, WILD Aquatic, & Learning Tree

WILD, WILD Aquatic, and PLT materials are available to formal and nonformal educators through workshops on request for groups of at least 15 educators and/or youth leaders. Workshops also are provided through several colleges and universities. View a current workshop list.
