Public Meeting on SO2 Nonattainment in Muscatine
Posted: 09/04/2013

The Department of Natural Resources Air Quality Bureau will hold a public meeting on October 3 at the Muscatine County Conservation Board’s Environmental Learning Center.  The purpose of the meeting is to discuss the timelines, requirements, and preliminary plans for addressing the 1-hour sulfur dioxide (SO2) nonattainment designation in Muscatine.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has designated the City of Muscatine and areas around the city in nonattainment for the 1-hour SO2 National Ambient Air Quality Standard (NAAQS). This designation will become effective on October 4. A nonattainment area is designated when outdoor (ambient) air pollution levels violate the NAAQS. EPA determined that the SO2 monitor located at Musser Park in Muscatine violated the 1-hour NAAQS for SO2.

When an area is designated in nonattainment, the state is required to submit a State Implementation Plan (SIP) demonstrating how it will meet the SO2 standard within five years. The SIP is due 18 months after the effective date of the final designation.

For more specific information about the EPA’s nonattainment designation for SO2 in the Muscatine area, please go to the Iowa Nonattainment Areas Webpage at http://www.iowadnr.gov/InsideDNR/RegulatoryAir/IowaNonattainmentAreas.aspx.

The public meeting will be held at 6 p.m.  The Environmental Learning Center is located at 3300 Cedar Street in Muscatine.
