State Geologist Issues Annual Report
IOWA CITY — The DNR’s Geological and Water Survey responded to a year of weather extremes in 2011 with projects highlighted in the Iowa State Geologist’s annual report.
“During the Missouri River flood throughout the spring and summer, we were providing mapping assistance and levee examinations. But by late in the year, our staff was monitoring developing drought conditions in northwest Iowa, and the impacts that might have on groundwater, streams and water supplies,” said Bob Libra, state geologist.
The report also includes highlights of the DNR’s work with groundwater quantity, drinking water supply protection and watershed-based water quality. Other features include mapping products developed in the past year, and how the DNR’s earth, water and mapping information is made available and used by Iowans.
