Proposed Salvage Timber Sale at Walnut Woods State Park
Posted: 01/11/2013
The Iowa Department of Natural Resources is proposing to remove 35 to 40 dead, dying, hollow, and structurally unsound trees in Walnut Woods State Park through a salvage timber sale.

The public is invited to discuss this proposal during a public meeting at 6:30 p.m., Jan. 23, at the Lodge at Walnut Woods State Park.

The trees have been identified as “high risk” for the potential to harm park visitors or damage park property.  Selected trees have been damaged by frequent floods, high winds and lightning, often leading to additional insect and disease problems.

A timber sale contract will be awarded to the highest bidder to harvest and remove the selected trees. To protect the site, as well as specific wildlife species, harvest activities will only be permitted through the end of March.

Reforestation of trees native to the site, primarily black walnut, along with bur oak and swamp white oak, is planned following completion of the harvest.

For more information, contact Tim Gedler, park manager, Walnut Woods State Park, at 515-285-4502.
