Update on Haul Road Best Management Practices Document

September 12, 2007

The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) anticipates having a second information meeting on the revised best management practices haul road document in early October. The meeting will be followed by the document’s consideration by the Environmental Protection Commission (EPC) for notice of intended action, probably in early December 2007. Approval of the notice of intended action by the EPC will formally begin the six to nine month rulemaking process.

The document’s purpose is to assist facility owners and operators in identifying and applying appropriate best management practices to control the emission of fugitive dusts from their paved and unpaved haul roads.

The first information meeting on the proposed best management practices document for haul roads was held July 25, 2007. The DNR received numerous comments and suggestions at the information meeting and afterward. This input was discussed in detail with several of the affected stakeholders and continues to be in review.

The DNR will announce the date and location of the future information meeting and the best management practices document through this list serve and on the Air Quality Bureau Website at www.iowacleanair.com.
