The Climate Registry is a collaboration of states, provinces and tribes aimed at developing and managing a common greenhouse gas emissions reporting system with high integrity that is capable of supporting various greenhouse gas emission reporting and reduction policies for its member states and tribes and reporting entities. It will provide an accurate, complete, consistent, transparent and verified set of greenhouse gas emissions data from reporting entities, supported by a robust accounting and verification infrastructure.

Governor Culver signed Iowa onto The Climate Registry July 5, 2007 and Department of Natural Resources Director Richard Leopold is a board member. As of August 9, 2007 thirty-nine of the United States , two Canadian provinces, and one Mexican state have joined The Climate Registry.

When finalized, the GRP will serve as the broad accounting standard for the Registry, providing guidance on a wide range of sources across many industries. The Registry anticipates adopting the final GRP at its January 15, 2008 meeting in Santa Monica , CA.
