DNR Accepts Modeling Conducted With AERMOD Only

January 2, 2007

As of December 9, 2006, all regulatory air dispersion modeling analyses submitted by industries and their consultants must be conducted using AERMOD (AMS/EPA Regulatory Model), unless prior approval has been granted by the department. The department has been conducting all internal dispersion modeling analyses with AERMOD since August 28, 2006.

As noted in previous articles, EPA promulgated AERMOD as a preferred guideline model in Appendix W of 40 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Part 51 on November 9, 2005. This promulgation became effective on December 9, 2005. Revision to the Iowa Administrative Code to adopt the revised Appendix W by reference became effective on August 23, 2006.

Questions related to AERMOD should be directed to the Air Quality Bureau's Modeling Group by calling (515) 242-5100.
