Emergency Spills and Fish Kills Spill

Manure releases and releases of hazardous substances must be reported to the DNR within six hours after the spill occurred or was discovered. See manure control for more information about manure releases.

For more information about reporting hazardous substances, see the spill response site.

Both types of spills must be reported to the DNR at (515) 281-8694 and to the local police department or sheriff in the county where the release has occurred. Manure releases from confinements can also be reported to the local DNR field offices.

State law does not require fish kills to be reported, but the sooner a fish kill is reported to the DNR the more likely the DNR can find the source of the fish kill, often a hazardous substance or manure release.
