Snowmobile Instructor and Groomer Operator Training Opportunities

The DNR is providing training opportunities as part of the 41st Annual Iowa State Snowmobile Convention.  Training will be held simultaneously on Sunday, November 23rd.  Classes will start at 9:00 a.m. 

Training for Snowmobile Volunteer Education Instructors will be for anyone interested in becoming an instructor or any instructor who needs to recertify.  The roll-out of the new interactive curriculum will be done at this session, so those interested in viewing this material are also invited to attend.  Instructors are required to attend a training session at least once every two years.  For more information or to register for this training, please contact Rhonda Fowler at or 515-281-3208.

Training for Groomer Operators will be for anyone interested in being certified to operate trail grooming equipment or any operator who needs to recertify.  Operators are required to attend a training session at least once every three years.  For more information or to register for this training, please contact Chris Willey at or 563-920-9010.

Training will be held at Grand Harbor Resort and Waterpark, 350 Bell Street, Dubuque, Iowa. 

Renewal Period for Snowmobile Registrations Starts September 1, 2014

All newly owned machines or machines which have not been renewed in the recreational vehicle and vessel registration system
(RVVRS) must be registered through the County Recorder’s Office in the owner’s county of residence.

Renewals can be done at any County Recorder’s Office (you only need to provide the IA number assigned to your snowmobile through RVVRS).  Snowmobiles which have been entered into RVVRS can also be renewed by U.S. Postal Service fulfillment through the Iowa DNR Online License and Registration Sales Site. You will need to provide your DNR customer number which is printed on your vehicle registration. You will also be able to purchase Iowa Resident User Permits. Both resident and nonresident user permits are available at County Recorder’s Offices and any license agent that sells hunting and
fishing licenses.

Special Event Permits

The Iowa DNR is authorized to approve a club or individual to hold an organized special events (an organized race, exhibition, or demonstration of limited duration which is conducted according to a prearranged schedule and in which general public interest is manifested) within the state if the event is scheduled to be held on public land or public ice. The DNR shall designate the equipment and facilities necessary for the safe operation of vehicles and for the safety of operators, participants, and observers.

Residents participating in a special event must display a current registration on their vehicles. Nonresidents must display a valid, Iowa nonresident user permit on their vehicles.

Special Events Calendar

When individuals and groups want to use public land and water for events, they must apply for use of that resource through the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.  These events are compiled by the Special Events System and are displayed on a calendar of events.  These events can be searched by type, location, and date.
