Iowa Boating Laws and Responsibilities
The Iowa Boating Laws and Responsibilities handbook is published by Boat Ed, one of several DNR-approved providers who offer Iowa's boating safety course. Although this handbook is a convenient reference tool, students wanting to receive official Iowa boating safety certification need to complete a comprehensive boat safety course.
The “Wear It Iowa” program is part of a national campaign designed to educate boaters on the importance of wearing a lifejacket while recreating on or near the water. Eighty-four (84) percent of the fatalities due to drowning that occurred nationwide involved individuals who were not wearing a life jacket. The Boating Education program is committed to providing Iowans with important resources and constant messages that save lives.

Special Event Permits
The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) may authorize the holding of organized special events (an organized race, exhibition, or demonstration of limited duration which is conducted according to a prearranged schedule and in which general public interest is manifested) within the state. The DNR shall adopt rules relating to the conduct of special events held under DNR permits, designating the equipment and facilities necessary for safe operation of vessels, and for the safety of operators, participants, and observers.
Permits for regattas, motorboat or other boat races, marine parades, tournaments, or exhibitions etc. to be held on Iowa state waters must be received from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources at least 30 days in advance of the event. If the event is being held on federally controlled waters, a permit from the U.S. Coast Guard is required.
