As spectacular as fireworks can be, the fine particles in smoke from fireworks can cause breathing problems for some if the air is stagnant. During these conditions, fine particles can be trapped near the ground and build to unhealthful levels. An air pollution monitor in Davenport recorded unhealthful levels of fine particles after Fourth of July fireworks in 2008.

The foaming was a result of staff manually directing the waste over to the digesters while the computerized system was down. A brain sample from another elk found dead on March 4 has also been collected, but the results have not yet been completed on that animal. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has issued a final rule amending the federal Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Reporting Program. This rule extends the reporting deadline for 2010 GHG data to September 30, 2011. With the amendment, EPA has extended the reporting deadline this year to allow adequate time for the testing and refinement of EPA's new online GHG reporting tool (e-GGRT) that facilities will use to submit data. This extension will give industry the opportunity to test the tool, provide feedback, and have sufficient time to become familiar with it prior to reporting.

DES MOINES - A 30-gallon diesel fuel spill at the Metro Waste Authority (MWA) transfer station on Delaware Avenue (between Des Moines and Ankeny) Tuesday evening travelled into a storm drain and on into an unidentified creek that is a tributary to the Des Moines River. Facility staff immediately applied absorbent materials on the spill and placed absorbent booms in the storm sewer and several locations on the creek.

DES MOINES - The city of Chariton reported both wastewater pumps at a small pump station were clogged. The operator reported the pumps were going to be pulled and cleaned. The DNR instructed the operator to dam the slow discharge while cleaning the pumps. The dam was built, but breached, sending a maximum of 900 gallons of wastewater into a tributary to White Breast Creek.
