In the year 2000, the Governor, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, and citizen stakeholders collaborated to review the water quality monitoring within the state. The whats, whys, and hows of monitoring were reviewed and a comprehensive plan was developed.
The plan covers all surface and groundwater resources. This plan is still the umbrella under which the Water Monitoring section of the Iowa DNR operates. It was revisited in 2006 to address gaps and new areas of concern in the water monitoring programs.
