Summer of 2013 P2 Intern Program Host Companies
Eighteen top engineering students are working in Iowa host companies as part of the DNR's 2013 Pollution Prevention Intern program. The program provides upper level engineering students with hands-on experience in a technical setting assisting facilities in identifying and evaluating opportunities to improve environmental and economic performance. The program’s engineering staff provides technical assistance to each intern throughout their internship. Two of these interns are assisting our clients in 24-week internships that provide additional time to explore more in-depth opportunities within the timeframe of this extended period of time.
The concept of pollution prevention is to analyze a process and reduce or eliminate the generation of waste at the source instead of treating, recycling or disposing of it later in the process. During their 12-week internships, students will analyze the current process, investigate alternatives and offer cost-saving strategies to reduce water usage, conserve energy and improve processes to help meet the host company’s environmental goals.
Host companies will receive a comprehensive report of the intern's work and recommendations to continue implementation and maintain new processes implemented.

Bridgestone Americas Tire Operations
Conduct a waste stream analysis by department and develop strategies to reduce waste generation and optimize the efficiency of waste management practices.
Conduct an analysis of the paint system and recommend equipment upgrades and process improvements to reduce energy usage and associated costs.
Danfoss Power Solutions
Identify and prioritize opportunities to reduce energy usage throughout the plant and develop an implementation plan.
Recommend and implement strategies to improve the operating efficiency of the of the heat treat furnaces at the plant to assist in meeting sustainability goals of greenhouse emission reductions.
Golden Crisp Premium Foods, Inc.
Identify, recommend and implement landfill diversion projects through waste reduction, reuse and recycling projects to support the company goal of reaching zero landfill status.
Conduct a campus-wide lighting audit and evaluate alternative technologies for various applications.
Grundy County Memorial Hospital
Optimize the operating efficiency of the boiler and steam systems to reduce associated costs and emissions.
Conduct a lighting assessment and provide recommendations for energy efficient upgrades in their Algona, IA manufacturing facility.
Conduct a waste audit and recommend strategies to reduce waste through process improvements and source reduction strategies.
John Deere Davenport Works
Conduct a motor survey and recommend improvements to the motors and compressed air system to reduce energy usage and emissions.
Stanley Engineered Fastening
Conduct an audit of the compressed air system in two manufacturing buildings and recommend improvements to optimize the efficiency and reduce costs.
Tyson Deli, Inc.
Investigate water reduction opportunities at the Cherokee plant and make recommendations to reduce usage to meet corporate reduction initiative.
UnityPoint Health - Des Moines
Expand the Waste Management Plan for pharmaceutical waste and reduce hazardous waste generation at the main facility.
West Liberty Foods, LLC
Optimize the efficiency of the compressed air systems in two processing facilities to reduce energy usage and utility costs.
Western Iowa Tech Community College
Develop a profile of energy usage and assess reduction opportunities in the mechanical systems of the main campus buildings.
