    Reusing EquipmentA donated air compressor
    by Alicia Presto, Area 4

Interstate Power and Light Company (IPL), a subsidiary of Alliant Energy Corporation, is a public utility in Iowa that generates and distributes electricity, and distributes and transports natural gas.  For nearly 25 years, IPL has worked with Black & Veatch Corporation, a global engineering and construction company, to investigate and remediate more than 20 former “manufactured gas” plant sites throughout Iowa.  Before the availability of natural gas, these historical plants made gas from coal for cooking, heating, and lighting.

At an IPL site in Belle Plaine, a building was demolished to excavate contaminated soil.  It had been used to store equipment and supplies utilized during the overall investigation/remediation activities.  Much of the equipment was no longer being used or needed.

Before demolition of the building in late 2013, usable supplies and equipment had to be moved to a different IPL property, sold, or donated.  Moving useable equipment to an alternate facility or disposing of outdated equipment can be costly, so Black and Veatch and IPL contacted the Iowa Waste Exchange to assist with the process.  The local Iowa Waste Exchange resource specialist worked with Black and Veatch for several months to identify reuse opportunities.

A generator and air compressor were donated to Coe College in Cedar Rapids for use in one of their shops.  Weather station equipment was donated to Iowa State University in Ames for students and faculty to use in the Geological and Atmospheric Sciences Department.  Various types of equipment such as pumps and self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) equipment were donated to local governments.  Pressure washers and air compressors went to a company in central Iowa that recycles used pallets and provides job training programs for adults with autism.

Two SCBA rescue tanksWith each donation, IPL was able to avoid the cost of moving or disposing of the equipment.  In addition, each donation provided usable equipment and savings to each organization. Other useful equipment and supplies from the facility were also sold to local businesses.
