Icy winds swirl tiny flakes of snow through the trees. Students, bundled from head to toe in insulating layers of fleece venture out to discover the Winter Springbrook. It is a quieter place offering subtle clues for those willing to brave the elements in their search. Where is the wildlife that seemed so abundant not so long ago? Stop…listen ….look closely, up, down, underneath…and the winter world opens before them. The struggle to survive, to find food, water, and most importantly shelter, becomes so obvious that they can feel it themselves. Build a shelter and imagine really needing it to survive. Attempt to start a fire without the convenience of matches. Hike to the lake and use an ice auger to reach the water, then dangle a wax worm into the hole to tempt fish hiding below.

Warm breath escapes with a happy, “I’ve got one!” A bluegill appears as the line is held high for all to see, and disappears just as quickly, released back into the hole. Hiking back, eyes turned skyward are rewarded with the sight of a Bald Eagle soaring overhead. The children head into the classroom to warm up for a bit while learning how to use a map and compass before striking out to test their new skills.

Springbrook is alive and well in winter, filled with adventures just waiting to happen. Venture out this winter, either at Springbrook or closer to home, and see what exciting things await!
