An Iowa winter is a time of contrasts; beautiful sunny days with forty degree temperatures followed by nights when the swirling winds feel forty degrees below zero. Imagine being a critter that has to deal with such conditions on a 24 hour basis! While some of Springbrook's inhabitants wait it out below the surface of the  ground, under the ice of the frozen pond or deep inside a hollow log, others have already begun to nest. Owls nest during January and February, which allows the young to have more success learning to hunt in the early spring, when prey species are more plentiful and easier to find.

Winter here has been filled with countless songbirds, (and a few predators) frequenting the feeders. On a given day we may find five species of woodpecker as well as titmice, nuthatches, chickadees and several types of finch vying for sunflower seeds, along with deer and the occasional opossum. This time of year the less energy spent gathering food the better!

Springbrook is alive and well in the winter! Students arrive, dressed in layers of colorful coats, hats, scarves, boots and mittens. They follow tracks through the woods in search of clues, dangle wax worms through holes in the ice and aim arrows at bulls-eye targets, warm air steaming from excited smiles. Tomorrow holds a lesson in survival, and this Winter Springbrook allows us to be a little more aware of the importance of a wind-proof shelter, a fire started with a bow drill, a well thought out plan.

You are more than welcome to join us, either with a group or solo to hike the trails for discoveries of your own.  Be sure to check out upcoming camp/workshop opportunities at:
