GUTTENBERG - The Iowa Department of Natural Resources investigated a fish kill in a storm water retention pond in Guttenberg Thursday.
Fisheries staff who were on site said it was likely a winter kill caused by a nearly complete freeze of the 7-acre retention pond along Hwy. 52. "There were no game fish in the pond, only carp and carp-goldfish hybrids," said Kevin Hanson, fisheries technician at Guttenberg. The retention pond is one of a series of four in the area, but it was the most shallow with a maximum depth of three feet.
Hanson said he expects to see other partial winter fish kills appear as the ice goes off lakes, ponds and backwaters across the state.
