DES MOINES - The City of Des Moines estimates a sewer line in the 4400 block of Southeast Eighth Street discharged about 450 gallons of wastewater on Monday. The city reports that some of that wastewater reached Yeader Creek.
The city was notified of the discharge at 6:30 p.m. Monday. The city flushed the line, disinfected the site with lime and stopped the discharge by 8 p.m.
People and pets should avoid the area for 48 hours.
"If residents see or smell something unusual that might be a sewer discharge, we encourage them to contact their city right away, so the discharges can be stopped as quickly as possible," said Dave Perry with the DNR's Des Moines office.
On Tuesday, the city is using cameras to look for obstructions in the sewer line that may have led to the discharge.
