The calendar may say Jan. 31, but for campers, that spring outing is just around the corner. The three month campsite reservation window stretches to the end of April and in a few weeks, the Mother’s Day weekend will be within reach.
The mild winter weather has many campers wishing they had not put their RV in storage this year. The temperature in central Iowa hit 66 degrees on Monday and the extended forecast has 50s and 40s in it, instead of 20s and 10s.
“We’re always excited to get the camping season underway,” said Kevin Szcodronski, chief of the Iowa Department of Natural Resources State Parks Bureau. Forty-nine campers, who have campsites reserved in April, agree.
Szcodronski said the past three years have been busy for state parks campgrounds. The slow economy has kept many Iowans close to home for their recreation.
“Our reservations have been strong during the down economy, which increases the competition for available sites,” he said. “If 2012 is anything like the previous three years, I would encourage campers to make their reservations early if they want to get their preferred sites in their preferred park.”
Camping season is already here on the DNR’s campsite reservation website:
