A Muscatine man was injured early Friday evening from a self-inflicted gunshot wound while deer hunting.
Steve Whitlow, 51, had just finished hunting northeast of Muscatine and was in the process of putting his gun away when it discharged while his hand was over the barrel firing a deer slug through his hand. The incident occurred shortly after 5:30 p.m. on Friday.
Whitlow was taken by ambulance to University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City where he was being treated for what is believed to be a non-life threatening injury.
“Hunters need to treat every firearm as if it is loaded and make sure that the muzzle is pointed in a safe direction at all times,” said DNR Conservation Officer Tom Campbell.
The Muscatine County Sheriff’s Department assisted in the investigation.
