An estimated 5,000 to 6,000 gallons of sewage was released to the Mississippi River by the city of Keokuk after a pump malfunction Monday morning.
The overflow occurred at the Indian Hills lift station on the city’s north side and was discovered by city crews during routine inspection Monday morning. A circuit breaker had tripped on one pump and the starter was burned out on another pump. It is unknown why an alarm failed to operate which would have alerted operators of the pump failure.
The circuit breaker was reset and the first pump immediately became operational and pumping sewage back to the plant for treatment. The other pump is being repaired.
