Lunch with Eagles Scheduled in Des Moines on Friday

DES MOINES - Wildlife watchers have an opportunity to lunch with our national symbol this week.

The Des Moines Parks and Recreation Department along with the Department of Natural Resources is hosting Lunch with Eagles on from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 18th at the Scott Avenue dam near downtown Des Moines. Biologists will be on-hand to provide information and answer questions about the eagles.

Bald eagles congregate in the area because fish going over the dam are stunned and become easy meals for the birds of prey, according to Pat Schlarbaum, a biologist with the DNR.

"People should bring their lunch and take the opportunity to see and learn more about these magnificent birds of prey," said Schlarbaum.

Schlarbaum estimates that there are thousands of eagles concentrated throughout the state providing citizens a number of opportunities to view the majestic birds and that additional eagle watching events are still being scheduled around Iowa. A listing of current scheduled events is below.
