Young Iowa artists and writers are encouraged to showcase their skills and submit artwork and poetry for the River of Words® contest by December 1, 2011.
Each year, River of Words conducts an international competition for students ages 5 to 19 to help youth understand the natural world through art and poetry.
“Environmental competitions like River of Words motivate students to use their talents and participate in activities they enjoy while gaining a broader understanding of nature and experiencing the outdoors,” Lisa Fascher, Iowa DNR River of Words coordinator.
While students must submit their entries to the national River of Words organization in California, all Iowa entries are sent back to the DNR for the statewide competition. Winners of the statewide contest will be on display throughout Iowa in a traveling exhibit.
In 2011, the exhibit was featured at the Blank Park Zoo, the Science Center of Iowa, and the National Mississippi River Museum & Aquarium.
The Iowa River of Words contest is coordinated by the Department of Natural Resources and IOWATER program.
