DES MOINES – A slow release of untreated wastewater occurred Friday near the Des Moines City Hall and entered the Des Moines River downstream of all intakes to Des Moines’ water supply.
Public works’ crews discovered the discharge about 11 a.m. while televising the collection system looking for problems. The city completed repairs at 1:30 p.m., ending the discharge. An estimated 1,500 gallons of wastewater were released Friday, but it’s unknown how long the discharge occurred.
About 10 gallons of wastewater per minute was seeping around an old brick and mortar wet well.
