The Iowa DNR and IOWATER are encouraging Iowa students ages 5 through 19 to create and submit artwork and poetry for the 2012 international River of Words® competition.
The contest is designed to help youth explore the natural and cultural history of their watershed and express what they discover through poetry and art.
“The inspiration for the student’s artwork comes from experiencing the beauty of Iowa’s natural resources,” said Lisa Fascher, Iowa DNR River of Words® coordinator. “The natural world inspires them to create a work of art and their artwork inspires those who see it to appreciate Iowa’s natural resources.”
After national winners are determined, entries will be sent back to the DNR for the statewide competition. Winning entries are included in a traveling statewide exhibition including locations such as the Blank Park Zoo, the Science Center of Iowa, the National Mississippi River Museum and Aquarium, the Knoxville Public Library and the State Capitol.
Students wanting to submit their entries for the 2012 contest must mail entries to River of Words® by December 1, 2011
