DES MOINES - The city of Asbury reported that a pump failed at Hales Mill pumping station on Saturday northeast of the city's wastewater plant. Untreated wastewater is discharging about 2,000 feet into the Cloie Branch of the Little Maquoketa River.

An electrical failure caused the lift station pumps to not operate. The generator started but pumps did not activate. Alarms also failed. The city estimates 400,000 gallons of untreated wastewater has been released. The DNR cautions that people and pets be kept out of the area for the next 48 hours.

The city intends to capture and haul the raw wastewater to the wastewater plant. The backup battery for the alarms has been charged.

DNR staff will continue to monitor the situation.
