Road Construction Closes Webster County's Lizard Creek to Paddlers

Construction on the southbound Hwy. 169 Bridge over Lizard Creek in Webster County is underway and this area is closed to paddlers until mid summer because of the amount of construction debris in the stream.

Work on the northbound bridge was completed last year and despite warning signs, a paddler went through the area and was killed. The warning signs are still in place and paddlers are warned not to paddle through this area.

Dennis Ward with the Iowa Department of Transportation said the debris should be removed within 30 days and once that is done, paddlers could paddle through while still using caution.

"We will notify paddling clubs when the debris has been removed," said Todd Robertson, with the Iowa DNR's Rivers Program. "In the meantime, do not paddle through this area."

Paddlers planning a trip over the holiday weekend are encouraged to use caution when paddling any stream as most are experiencing high water and fast flows from the recent heavy rains and more rain is in the forecast.
