DES MOINES - An estimated one million gallons of untreated wastewater was released into the Des Moines River on Wednesday afternoon near Prospect Park in Des Moines.
The wastewater bypass occurred when the motor on a pump failed causing the sewage to back up and flow out of a manhole across the ground at Prospect Park and into the river. The bypass occurred downstream from the water intake for the Des Moines Water Works and would not affect drinking water.
Des Moines Public Works was instructed to do water sampling from the Des Moines River and to apply lime on soil where the runoff occurred to kill any pathogens.
The incident continues to be investigated by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.
