DES MOINES - A water main break resulted in a manhole overflow of the sanitary sewer at East 35th Court and University Avenue yesterday evening. City staff estimated 4,500 gallons of wastewater flowed into a nearby storm water intake which eventually discharges to Four Mile Creek.

City staff had stopped the bypass by 3 a.m. this morning and treated the contaminated area with lime.

People and pets should avoid the area around the creek until tomorrow morning.
