Posted: 08/01/2014

The city of Cherokee reported a wastewater discharge to the DNR after discovering a break in a forcemain near 630 River Road at 10:30 this morning.

The break is near a small tributary that flows into the nearby Little Sioux River. The city is diverting some wastewater, but estimates about 100 gallons per minute is reaching the tributary.

The DNR cautions kayakers and others to avoid water contact immediately south of town. Residents should keep children and pets away from the area until 24 to 48 hours after the pipe is repaired.

City staff is working to locate the break so they can begin repairs.

The DNR has staff from Spencer on-site to assist the city and monitor the cleanup.
