The Friends of the Mines of Spain received a $2,500 grant from the Alliant Energy Foundation that will be used for new interpretive signs and information at the newly expanded and renovated E. B. Lyons Interpretive Center of the Mines of Spain Recreation Area.
The signs will provide information on the natural and cultural resources found in the area, including the tall grass prairies, forests, savannas, wetlands, river/creek wildlife and plant life.
The signs will also provide information on the people that have lived in the area from 11,000 years ago, including the Meskwaki and Julien Dubuque. The signs will be installed inside the center and outside along two of the parks interpretive hiking trails.
The center has exhibits and displays about the natural and cultural features in the park. The center is located just south of Dubuque at 8991 Bellevue Heights off Hwy. 52 south. For information about the park and the center call 563-556-0620 or go to http://minesofspain.org.
