DYERSVILLE - A Dyersville concrete company reported a spill of about 1,000 gallons of wash water to Bear Creek in Dubuque County Monday afternoon.
The wash water is a byproduct of rinsing clean stone and is normally contained in an earthen basin. Muskrats apparently burrowed into the side of the containment area, allowing the wash water to flow into and cloud the stream. Workers at Bard Concrete noticed the cloudy water and quickly responded, shutting down the release within 10 minutes.
The DNR is monitoring the situation. A slightly elevated level of sediment in the water is the most probable environmental concern.
