Wastewater Discharge in Keokuk
Posted: 04/03/2014

The city of Keokuk had a wastewater discharge at 2 a.m. Thursday, releasing about 35,000 gallons of untreated wastewater to the Mississippi River.

The discharge started at the wastewater treatment plant when leaves and debris clogged up large augers, restricting flow into the plant and allowing it to overflow.

City crews removed and cleaned the augers, restoring normal wastewater treatment by 3 a.m. Thursday.

The DNR will continue to monitor the situation, but DNR staff said impact to the river will be minimal because of seasonally high flows.
