The city of Cedar Rapids has linked a small wastewater discharge on the southeast side of Cedar Rapids to International Paper Company.
The partially treated industrial wastewater overflowed from a manhole about 7:40 a.m. Thursday and ran into a storm sewer that drains to a Prairie Creek tributary. The wastewater is high in organic matter which pulls oxygen from the water as it decomposes.
The city reported to the DNR that the stream looks clear with no floating debris.
The wastewater release ended about 8:30 a.m. after International Paper cut back flow in their discharge. The company estimates 500 gallons were released.
The DNR will continue to monitor the situation.
