SHENANDOAH-A scraper arm in a wastewater clarifier at the Shenandoah wastewater treatment plant broke Wednesday night requiring emergency repairs on Thursday.

The city estimated that about 150,000 gallons of partially treated wastewater would run into a drainage ditch and then to the East Nishnabotna River between 10:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Thursday.

As of 1 p.m., the city had drained wastewater from the primary clarifier and was discharging wastewater through a storm water clarifier while welders repaired the scraper arm. Although the wastewater is receiving some treatment, it is bypassing biological treatment.

The DNR is requiring water samples and testing and is monitoring the situation.
