MELVIN — A manure spill from High Plains Dairy near Melvin in Osceola County flowed into a dry creek, an unnamed tributary to the Floyd River. The spill was dammed three-quarters of a mile south of the spill site.
The spill occurred due to failures of a pump and turn-off switch. An estimated 200,000 gallons of manure was released.
The manure is being pumped from the creek and injected into a field. Cleanup should take all day, Sept. 30.
The DNR will continue to monitor the situation and take appropriate enforcement action.
