West Liberty Gun Club Receives Governor's Volunteer Award

The West Liberty Gun Club, of West Liberty, received a Governor’s Volunteer Award for its support of hunter education and shooting sports in Iowa.

Students from Muscatine County’s hunter education classes visit the Club each year for their final day giving them the opportunity to experience live fire exercises.  Club members routinely assist with teaching classroom portions of the hunter education program and as firing range officers.

Members support the Department of Natural Resources Youth Hunter Education Challenge through a $250 annual cash donation and by sending instructors to participate in and assist with the event.

The club regularly makes its facility available to various area law enforcement agencies for training purposes, and, for more than 25 years, to the DNR for hunter education.

Unfortunately, the facility was destroyed by fire in January of 2013.

Tom Campbell, state conservation officer for the Iowa DNR in Muscatine County, nominated the West Liberty Gun Club for the award.
