ARLINGTON - An 18-year-old man from Arlington was injured Thursday morning by a self-inflicted gunshot wound while target shooting at sparrows on his grandfather's farm northwest of Strawberry Point in Clayton County. House sparrows are not a protected game species in Iowa.

Austin Hawkins suffered a gunshot wound to left foot that resulted in a fracture when he slipped on some mud and the 22-caliber rifle he was carrying fired.

Hawkins was driven by a parent to Mercy Hospital in Oelwein then later transferred to Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo for additional treatment to what is believed to be a non-life threatening injury.
